Lymphatic Drainage Therapy is a specialty that manual therapists learn to work with clients who have stagnation or fluid congestion. Most massage therapists learn very basic lymphatic techniques while in school, however, they do not create a specialized therapist.  Details associated with working and training to perform Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT) , or Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), require additional classes and courses, after a completed Massage diploma or certificate.

Many schools teach lymphatic drainage, and they each vary slightly, but with similar goals in mind. All 10 therapists at Lymph Balance Centre, are trained with a minimum of a level one training, with most going into advanced trainings and certification programs.  The skill set of a therapist is vital when working with clients with sluggish, slow or incompetent lymphatic systems.  There are many issues that would deem a client unfit to receive this work, and it is not a matter of yes or no.  There are many contraindications (reasons for no treatment at all), or precautions (reasons for a modified session).  We are trained to look at a complete health history questionnaire, see referrals from doctors and define a safe treatment plan for each patient.

When searching the internet, keywords that we avoid include Lymphatic Massage, as lymphatic drainage is most definitely not a massage. It does not feel like a massage, there is no lotion involved, and is very light in pressure, in contrast.  First appointments tend to be shorter than an hour, most commonly 30 minutes, as it is important that your lymphatic system is not overwhelmed.  Our Lymphatic Drainage sessions start with a complete history overview, detailed questions and then a short session. With a follow up via phone, email or text in the 24-48 hours after the session, we are able to see how each patient responds individually to the therapy.  Some clients can only tolerate a 30 minute session every couple of weeks, while others can handle a 60 minute session, and the results hold for a month or even more.  There is no cookie cutter session for lymphatic drainage, and that is how it should be. We are all unique individuals, and therefore, your session should be unique as well.
